The Last Speech of Jim Valvano: Life Lessons on the Verge of Death

Jim Valvano was a college basketball coach who in 1983 led, against all odds, to the University of North Carolina State to the NCAA title. Ten years later, in 1993, ESPN awarded him an ESPY prize, and on March 4, the day he collected the award, he gave a speech that everyone should listen to at least once in their lives. Only eight months ago he had been diagnosed with cancer, and in fact, he lost his life on April 28 of the same year.

This speech, which is nothing more than a summary of his way of living and watching sports, leaves us with several lessons that we should never forget.

Laugh, think, cry

The three things we should do every day of our life to fill it with enthusiasm. Three simple things to which many times we do not give them the value they have nor do we try to do them.

Put enthusiasm in what you do

Achieving that emotion, that enthusiasm, is not free. You need to get where you want because only with enthusiasm do you get the strength to never give up, to work every day and give everything. Thus he fought with North Carolina State until success, and thus fought against cancer until the day of his death.

Never forget who you are or where you come from

Valvano was of Italian origin, and as he himself indicated at some point in his life, he fulfilled all the stereotypes of the Italians. And he loved it. Although when he came to the NCAA his character was not well received, he never stopped behaving as he was.

Give people the importance they have

This idea was the basis on which he built all his equipment. A close coach who gave more importance to the players than tactics, who simply sat with them and said: “Tell me what you want”. He loved his players, and with that love he managed an invincible team.

Believe in what you do

If you set a goal, the only way to achieve it is to have the conviction that you are going to do it. Since he started training college teams, he told his father: “I’m going to win the NCAA.” The first day he arrived at North Carolina State he told them: “We’re going to win the NCAA.” And your trust for others.
