Thomas Chandler Haliburton Quotes and Sayings – (Windsor, December 17, 1796 – Isleworth, August 27, 1865 ) was a Canadian writer. After studying law at the University of King’s College, in his hometown of Windsor, he stayed for some time in England, where he met Louisa Neville, who was his wife from 1816 to 1840, the year he died.

Haliburton initially practiced as a lawyer and then as a judge. From 1826 to 1829 he was elected representative of the County of Annapolis in the Assembly of Nova Scotia. He was also a well-known businessman.

He wrote numerous books on historical – political topics including A General Description of Nova Scotia, published in 1823, A Historical and Statistical Report of Nova Scotia, published in 1829 and The English in America published in 1851.

He became famous throughout the British Empire for a book of adventures entitled The Watchmaker, published in 1836 in Halifax and focusing on the character of Sam Slick. After moving to England, he married widow Sarah Harriet Owen Williams in 1856 and in 1859 was elected to Parliament, in the ranks of the conservative minority. He died at Isleworth, in the County of Middlesex, England, on 27 August 1865.

In 1884, he was founded in his name, at the King’s College University of Windsor in which he had studied, the Haliburton Club, one of the oldest literary societies in North America. His son Arthur ( 1832 – 1907 ) was named Baron.
